Ready For My Internship

Year Up has equipped my classmates and I with a distinguished set of skills and abilities. The skills I’ve learned at the Year up Bay Area will help me create a firm foundation to a bright future and a successful career. A major ability learned and reinforced at Year Up was the ability to successfully network. Overtime I’ve noticed that building and maintaining a network is necessary for a successful career. Though I feel  I am fully prepared to be successful at my internship I do have questions. One question I have concerning my internship is “How can I turn this opportunity into a full-time position?”. I hope the environment at my internship is casual and professionally balanced. The ideal manager for me is someone that helps me feel comfortable about asking questions. Another quality I hope my manager has is helpfulness. I feel I will do a lot better with help from my manager and co-workers. I’m looking forward to my internship for many reasons. The main reason for my internship excitement is the work ethic I will enforce. My main goal is to be offered a full-time position with my desired placement. I plan to stand apart by working hard and displaying my dedication. I feel if I remained professionally determined and show I am willing to learn they will offer me a more permanent role.

Diary Entry

When I finally got off the 5 hour flight from California, I was relieved and very hungry. I kept thinking about all my most favorite places to eat in New York. My favorite kind of food is chinese food. The only problem with that is chinese food is different on the west coast. Since i was in New York, I was ready to get me a plate. I got on the train to queens. Then I Caught the Q44 bus from Queens to Castle Hill avenue. When i got of the bus I was smiling from ear to ear. Finally i was home, I ran to my house dropped off my bag, greeted my family then headed out. Once I got to the chinese store and order my plate i was ready to eat. I got my food and finished quicker then i ordered, man i felt good to be home.

Diary Entry

Over the break i had a few days to spend in california before my trip home. I wanted to spend my last couple of days relaxing with friends. Luckily I got a couple days off from work. I found out that i didn't leave on the 23rd, i actually left on the 24th. This gave me added time to just hang out and prepare for my trip. With my time off from work and Year Up I decided to spend it just going to different places around the city.

Diary Entry

During this winter break I was lucky enough to return back to New York. I enjoyed my trip very much. The highlight of my trip was the time I got to spend with my family. The last time I was in New York was in June, this was the longest period of time i spent away from my family. Coming back was difficult due to some changes had to quickly adjusted to. In my absence I hadn't realized how accustom I became to California. Many things from the weather to the differences in appearance was a bit shocking to me. The neighborhood I left behind was very different from the one I came back to. Through it all I was happy to finally be home. I got the chance to catch up with old friends and family which was something i needed.

What is internship Ready?

There are many different qualities a person must have to be internship ready. These qualities are the foundation of an expectational Year Up students attitude. Practicing what Year Up calls ''Core Values" is a sure way to prepare yourself for your internship in a professional sense. One major quality of someone who is internship ready is dependability. Making yourself a dependable worker is something that managers at internships look for in their employees. Another more important quality is a strong work ethic. Being hardworking is what sets a good employee apart from an exceptional one, it sets aside the diligent from the ones doing enough to get by. Last but not least a crucial characteristic of an internship ready individual is someone who is punctual. Being hard working and professional are important qualities, but they will be shadowed by poor attendance. Each characteristic I've mentioned is just as important as the other, but it takes a healthy balance of the 3 that creates a truly internship ready individual.

My Favorite Job

Looking back on my work history it is safe to say I’ve had my fair share of employment.  Each position I’ve held served as not only a way of obtaining finances, but, a lesson in life. Throughout my work career I learned and developed many different skills and abilities, some which I still use in my everyday life. One key skill that was created and harnessed throughout my working experience was the ability to interact productively with other people. Throughout all of my past jobs there were some I enjoyed more than others.  In my opinion the best job I ever had was a youth coordinator at United Playaz youth center. This job was my favorite for many reasons, the pay was acceptable, and however that wasn’t my main motivation for enjoying this job. Working closely with kids and making a positive influence in their lives, gave me a sense of fulfillment that no paycheck could ever give. Some of my responsibilities included picking up the kids from school, making sure they completed their homework, and providing them with entertaining activities until it was time for them to get picked up. Working with youth age’s 8- 18 created the necessity for extreme patience and dedication. My care for the young people I worked with kept me dedicated. Understanding how to behave in a professional setting and understanding that a grown man should be able to maintain his composure helped me succeed. These characteristics I learned as a youth coordinator are skills I feel will serve me well at my internship. One of the beneficial things I learned while working as a youth coordinator was a passion for ones work along with a sharp understanding helps you succeed.

Black Friday

This past Friday was possibly one of the most anticipated days of the years. “Black Friday” is infamously known to shoppers for is mayhem, as well as the deals it presence to consumers. It is common practice for consumers to line up hours before stores open to be the first to take advantage of sales prices. Some shoppers make it a habit annually to camp out in front of their favorite stores for a head start on cheap shopping. One aspect of “Black Friday” usually not considered is the amount of money spent. Considering the current financial situation of America and its Citizens Money is a sensitive topic. “Black Friday” not only makes shopping more affordable, but it also has a positive effect on American economy. Considering that consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of the economy, Black Friday is very useful in many different ways. Though there are many beneficial aspects of Black Friday there are also some issues that are best left avoided. For instance the one day presence of good shopping deals, creates the incentive to spend money saved for other purposes is created. The anxiety of missing out on good deals causes people to spend thee savings on impulse buying. Though consumer sales went up in the mist of the financial chaos national savings fell. This past Thanksgiving weekend shoppers spent an estimated $ 52.4 billion dollars. On average shoppers spent $398.62 helping retail sales climb 16%. Internet shoppers on Black Friday spent an estimated $816 with $479 million spent on Thanksgiving Day. One fact about Black Friday is it sets the stage for mass shopping. One thing I feel should be considered is the reason for spending.
